Curly Hair Care Routine

Maintaining one's crowning glory is not a glorious task at all. In fact, I strongly believe that it's a long process of finding what suits you and your hair which involves a lot of experimentation and brand / product trying from time to time.

Being born with natural curls, growing up was a bit of a struggle because of the constant teasing from classmates and from strangers. That act from this judgmental world is what I don't fully understand because what's wrong with having a curly hair? Well, thanks to the "ever reliable" {sarcasm intended} media for defining "ugly" as a person with curly hair. Anyhoo, I shared that because it was really difficult building my self-confidence and self-esteem while I was growing up.

But when Taylor Swift started emerging in Hollywood, with her beautiful natural blonde curls, I also started loving and appreciating mine. So I started looking for ways to define my curls and to start taking better care of it.

Three years ago, I shared "How to manage curly hair (curly hair care tips)" but these ways have been updated and the routine I have now pretty much works for me so I'm sharing my curly hair care routine just in case you also have natural curls (or permed) and you still can't figure out how to maintain it. My curly hair care routine might help you out!

1. CLEANSE BUT SAY GOODBYE TO SHAMPOO. Truth be told, I don't shampoo my hair every single day. In fact, I lessen the days that I shampoo my hair, probably once a week or once every two weeks. But cleaning your hair is important. There are shampoos for dry scalp and as well as for oily scalp so you just have to do your research to know what best suits your scalp type.

2. CONDITION, CONDITION, CONDITION. A hair conditioner is a curly hair's best friend! To be honest, curly hair gets tangled for no reason so conditioning it doesn't only give it moisture but it really helps detangle those tangled curls! I have pretty damaged hair due to hair colorants (if you can't tell already, I love coloring my hair) so I use conditioner every single day or whenever I take a bath.

I'm currently using a conditioner with tea tree oil from Landmark (TriNoma).

3. HAIR SPA. There are days that I use hair spa after using a conditioner or just plain hair spa after shampooing my hair. I usually use Watson's Hair Spa Macadamia and Argan Oil. The Hair Spa Macadamia is for anti-breakage as it reduces hair fall and split ends. The Hair Spa Argan Oil is for promoting growth and health of hair from roots to tips! It's for reviving full bodied and nourished hair, leaving hair soft, shiny and manageable.

4. DON'T USE A HAIRBRUSH. Instead, use a wide tooth comb or just your fingers. A hair brush actually causes the frizz so as much as possible, say goodbye to hairbrush! A wide tooth comb is gentle on scalp and is easier to detangle with less hair fall. See how beautiful and buo my curls are? Well, this is why.

5. COMB HAIR ONCE A DAY AND ONLY AFTER TAKING A BATH WHEN IT'S STILL WET. I know that a lot of people would go against combing the hair when wet, especially those with straight hair because they would tell you that it's bad for your hair. Actually, having a curly hair, combing it wet actually does me good. Unlike girls with straight hair, combing ours every minute or every hour or whenever it gets windy shouldn't be done as it just worsens our hair. Combing it dry makes it worst. So when your hair is dry, no more combing!

6. USE MONEA CURL DEFINING MILK HAIR LOTION. I've tried a lot of products but this one really intensifies my curls and gives definition and bounce without worrying of my hair being buhaghag after a few hours. It's extremely affordable too as it's only Php 99.00 for 200 ml.

7. APPLY HAIR PRODUCTS WHEN HAIR IS WET. Curly hair works best with wet hair. So I apply Monea Curl Defining Milk Hair Lotion after combing my hair.

So there you have it! My curly hair care routine. If you have other hair care products you’d like me to try or if you have a curly hair care routine, please let me know by leaving a comment below! :)

  4. These are great tips:) I totally agree about not shampooing hair all the time. I only wash my hair twice a week coz it's so frizzy. And yes yes yes to conditioner.
BTW, I think your hair is awesome!

  5. Ooh, Rae! I love your different hair colours from the photos and your curls are beautiful and don't let anyone tell you otherwise D:<< I've grew up with straight hair, but my hair is EXTREMELY puffy at the top. >.>" I've also been using a hairbrush since hair sprouted on my head and I comb my hair way too often! I'll definitely have to look into this and perhaps get myself a comb. I also don't shampoo my hair very often because I don't want my hair to dry out. This was a pretty informative post ^^ keep it up~!
